Deity Worship
Today I was trained to wake the Deities up after Their afternoon nap, offer the fruit offering, arati and clean the altar.
It was pretty cool.
Very humbling to stand before the Lord of the universe.
What a great life Srila Prabhupada has exposed us to due to his causeless mercy of coming to the West at such an advanced age.
Thank you.

Tolerance
Being tolerant is an art form.
Especially in devotional life.
How much the protagonists in the Srimad Bhagatavam would tolerate all for the pleasure of Lord Krsna?
Serving in such a small proximity as the Soho Street Temple means we have to tolerate SO MUCH !
But is where the nectar is... to control the tongue from speaking what it wants to and using the brain to use speech to elevate others consciousness.

VICTIM
Inquire submissively & serve
Unless you inquire submissively and hear attentively, you cannot preach the message of Godhead. Lord Brahma humbling himself before Vishnu, “I do not know; please philosophically explain, who I am, who are You? What is this material world? And what is happiness?” Arjuna asked Krishna the same question, Sanatana Goswami asked Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu this same question, Lord Chaitanya asked Ishwar Puri the same question. This is Parampara; to inquire submissively, to serve. What we hear, Krishna consciousness is not a radical process, it is a practical process. We must inquire submissively, we must hear from proper authorities. Otherwise we do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. But then it is essential we must put those understandings into practice, in our life. Through that process, practicing in a spirit of humility and devotion, in a spirit of a servant of the servant, we get realization.

Sweet Tiredness
Feel really tired today.
Been a L-O-N-G day.
Was up at 3.10am and went to bed .... well... after I write this blog piece !
Cooked for Krsna in the morning - 7.40am offering... what a rare privilege.
Srila Prabhupada came into our lives and sprinkled his mercy dust on all our heads. And now our lives are sooooo happy and auspicious.
This means we have the opportunity to engage in service all day - every day.
What great mercy!
I feel tired today but it is such a sweet taste ... not the ordinary tiredness one would get from working like a dog all day and then going home and going through the same drill over and over again.
This tiredness is causing great satisfaction in my heart. I am feeling content and satisfied in my life.
It is so sweet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada for making the arduous journey to the west and giving us all the opportunity to expericene this sweet tiredness !

Responsibilty
Taking on responsibility in Krsna Consciousness means taking on voluntary headaches!
People forget you are carrying out a service and that your actions are not personal.
I usually tell people I know will be difficult that I am not speaking to them as Bhava Bhakti but as xx service role or yy service role.
Of course when we don't want to take responsibilities for our actions the scapegoat is always our temple authority. They made us have poor sadhana.
They made us not carry out our services nicely.
It is because of them that I am not following etiquette nicely.
Etc etc.
Taking responsibility is therefore a two way process.
The person who takes on the responsibility on behalf of Guru and Gauranga and also the person who has to accept his/her predicament as a result of their own past actions and karma.

The Fear of Surrender
As we take to this process more and more we can start to get a little fearful.
The fear comes from the understanding that you have to surrender more and more.
Surrender what?
Primarily it is to surrender our independence and take shelter of the Lord and His pure devotee.
We like to be in control, in charge, making things happen.
But actually if we analyse our lives closely we will see that we could not even get out of bed if there were no higher authorities helping us.
Surrender to be free.
This might sound like an oxymoron but it is the motto of our movement.
Surrender to Krsna to become free from the miseries of unrestricted senses, the mind, contaminated intelligence and most important of all... the false ego.

Death - the final exam
Srila Prabhupada said that death is the final exam of life.
What spiritual practices we have engaged in throughout our lives are tested at death.
Not so easy to call out to God when you have not practiced it .... God is not so cheap.
Today we received a call from a man at Hammersmith Hospital. His son in law was dying and a 'Hindu' priest was required.
I went to the hospital with another devotee.
The dying man looked in his late 40's. His hapless wife and 2 kids sat opposite him.
We took with us a maha garland, maha water, maha tulasi, a picture of the Deities, and the Bhagavad-Gita.
Turns out that the woman's father was not asking for a priest right away... he just wanted to know if there was one available if he needed one.
Anyway I said he should take the maha articles we had brought anyway as the spirit soul needs to be spiritually nourished NOW while it is still in the body and not later when it is left the body.
The father was a Hindu who was not prepared to listen so I appealed to his daughter who was soon to be a widow.
I told her to put the maha articles on her husband and that she and her family can also drink the maha water.
I also gave her the Bhagavad-Gita and told her that she should read to her husband while her father protested they have a Hindu bhajans tape playing in the background ... and so don't need our items.
I insisted and the daughter took the sacred articles.
I told the daughter she will need spiritual solace, as will her kids, after her husband leaves and so she can then lean on the Bhagavad-Gita.
I am thinking of the poor dying man... we came to chant to him but were thwarted by his father in law...
Maybe we were supposed to give Krsna Consciousness to his wife and kids instead ....
I pray he has an auspicious departure and that his wife and kids dip into the tranquil waters of the Bhagavad-Gita.

Watch out for the weeds !
It is so easy to start something new.
A diet for example.
Or making a vow to chant more rounds or earlier in the morning.
But I find that the weeds of Maya are so subtle and they creep up so slowly that you almost always get thwarted in your plans if you are not careful.
How many times have I started a vow to chant more or to wake up earlier only to suddenly find myself having this so called obstacle to contend with or that to contend with.
It is all so draining to find yourself at square one again.
One time my Guru Maharaj said that trying to be Krsna Conscious in this material world is like trying to swim upstream. How hard is that?
So really I guess we should expect some resistance from the material energy when we try to leave the comfy shackles of her thorny embrace.

Soft like Butter!
We should inquire from the spiritual master submissively, not with the desire to acquire knowledge but the desire to serve, not with the desire to become learned, but the desire to surrender. And we find also detachment, renunciation… although Raghunatha Das Goswami is such an embodiment of renunciation we should follow in his footsteps but if we artificially put too much of our consciousness of trying to be renounced, Prabhupada said it causes hard heartedness. Bhakti means soft heartedness, the whole process of bhakti is to make our heart soft like butter then Krsna will steal it, that is the perfection of our life. Trying to become Krsna conscious by performing all kinds of tapyasa and in the process our heart is getting hard, we are getting more proud, we are becoming more indifferent to personalities. Sometimes even detachment, if it is artificially done, one becomes excessively self centred, instead of being para dukha dukhi, we become so absorbed in torturing ourselves of fasting and giving up sleep and giving up all of our bodily necessities, we are always thinking about our bodies all the time, we are thinking about how renounced we are, we are thinking about how everybody else are sense enjoyers. I am fasting on ekadashi and he is eating vegetables, sense enjoyer! fallen soul! Hare Krsna. We may say oh you are very nice but in our heart we may be thinking like this, I am better than you, it is hard heartedness.

The importance of chanting japa
I feel it is very important to finish your rounds as early as possible ( I aim for 7am) and never to carry any over to the next day.
This should be worked towards but if we slip up once or twice what to do?
We are only human and striving for perfection. We are definitely not perfect yet.
Our japa rounds are like the umbilical cord attaching us to Krsna - our life line in the material world. So we need to cultivate a mood of utter dependency and gratefulness to these rounds and lovingly chant our prescribed number of rounds every day.
It is our rounds which determine our devotional mood and the way we treat others. Anyone can work like a mule... but can we all sit down and attentively chant our rounds?
Not so easy in practice... and even more harder to chant them all in one go... but this is also best.

Goals
Setting goals in spiritual life is important as it means you have something to work towards.
Could be something simple like "I will wake up 30 mins earlier to have a shower and chant some rounds before work for the next 6 weeks".
Or
Could be something like " I will have read all of Srimad Bhagavatam by 2010".
It is so easy to stagnate in spiritual life.
My Guru Maharaj says lethargy and egoism are the two biggest obstacles in spiritual life.
I think by setting goals it is a good way to beat these two obstacles by always keeping the mind busy in working towards these goals.
And you can also set mini short term goals to work towards the longer term goals.
The mind is crazy when not a devotee... got to control it by any means.

"What's this got to do with going back to Godhead?"
The above sentence is what a good friend of mine said to me today as I talked about how someone was really hacking me off... !
And it stopped me in my tracks... and made me realise ... yer that is true.
Who cares about the petty insecurities we have about this person or that person. Who cares about what we lack and what we really want.. and why does she have it and not me??
Who cares that he said this and she said that...
At the end of the day all this is all so inconsequential as it is really just about you and Krsna... and there ain't no you and Krsna if you can't love those things He loves... like His devotees to start with.
So .... let it go... and just dare to surrender to the process.... go on... you can't lose... except your false ego, anxieties and petty mindedness.
Jaya Gaura Bhakta Vrinda ki .... jay !

Who is Lord Caitanya?
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna, advented Himself as Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, appearing in Sridhama Mayapura in the city of Navadvipa, Bengal in the year 1407 AD. Sri Krsna Caitanya manifested his divine mercy in Kali Yuga by delivering the Hare Krsna maha mantra and thereby saving the most fallen souls.
The divine appearance of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Phalguna (February-March). This is the most auspicious day for all Gaudiya Vaisnavas, the most sacred and special festival to glorify the appearance in this world of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna Caitanya. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is none other than the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna, who incarnates in the form of a devotee, to enjoy rasa. Srila Krsna dasa Kaviraja describes in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, that Sri Sri Radha and Krsna are one divine self, or one and the same, but they have taken two bodies. Both Radha and Krsna constantly enjoy each other, and taste the pleasures of divine love. To taste this divine mellow, Sri Sri Radha-Krsna have appeared in one body, as Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who appeared in Mayapura Dhama.
It is explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam 1:3:28 that Lord Buddha appeared at the beginning of Kali Yuga as the 21st incarnation of the Lord. The final (22nd) incarnation described in that passage is Lord Kalki, who is predicted to appear at the end of Kali Yuga. While not described in this particular passage, elsewhere in Srimad-Bhagavatam Lord Caitainya Mahaprabhu is predicted to appear near the beginning of the Kali Yuga. In the seventh canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Prahlada Maharaja directly hints at the hidden nature of the Supreme Lord's appearance:
"Because the Supreme Lord is also called Tri-Yuga, or one who appears in only three yugas (satya, dvapara, treta), He is sometimes said to appear in a concealed form, in the age of Kali."
Srimad-Bhagavatam 7:9:38
In the Atharva-Veda Purusa-Bodini-Upanisad, it is said: "In the seventh manvantara, in the beginning of the Kali-Yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will, accompanied by His own associates, descend in a golden form to the earth. He will teach the chanting of His own names."
"Why did Krsna assume the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu? It is explained that Krsna desired to know the glory of Radha's love. "Why is She so much in love with Me?" Krsna asked. "What is My special qualification that attracts Her so? And what is the actual way in which She loves Me?" It seems strange that Krsna, as the Supreme, should be attracted by anyone's love. We search after the love of a woman or a man because we are imperfect and lack something. The love of a woman, that potency and pleasure, is absent in man, and therefore a man wants a woman, but this is not the case with Krsna, who is full in Himself. Thus Krsna expressed surprise: "Why am I attracted by Radharani? And when Radharani feels My love, what is She actually feeling?" In order to taste the essence of that loving affair, Krsna appeared just as the moon appears on the horizon of the sea. Just as the moon was produced by the churning of the sea, by the churning of spiritual love affairs the moon of Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared. Indeed, Lord Caitanya's complexion was golden, just like the moon. Although this is figurative language, it conveys the meaning behind the appearance of Caitanya Mahaprabhu."

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the master of all transcendental potencies, and who may be known only by devotional service, [bhakti vedyah] appears in innumerable transcendental forms. He has appeared in red, white and black complexions, [gauro rakta syamala sveta rupah] and He will also appear in the golden form of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Who is Rupa Goswami?
Srila Rupa Goswami appeared in 1489 in Karnataka, South India. He was the younger brother of Srila Sanatana Goswami.
Forced by various circumstances, Srila Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami had to work for the Muslim government of Bengal under Nawab Hussein Shah. Rupa Goswami was then known by the Muslim name Dabir Khas ('private secretary'). Although he enjoyed great wealth and prestige, he never forgot Lord Sri Krishna. Even before meeting Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Rupa Goswami had already written several books on Vedic philosophy and was renowned for his learning and devotion.
In 1514, Rupa and Sanatana met Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the first time and were initiated by Him. Rupa left government service and spent ten days hearing from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu the philosophy of Krsna consciousness. Sri Caitanya then ordered Rupa Goswami to go Vrindavana with a fourfold mission: (1) to uncover the lost sites of Lord Krishna's pastimes, (2) to install Deities of the Lord and arrange for Their worship, (3) to write books on Krsna consciousness, and (4) to teach the rules of devotional life.
At first Rupa Goswami felt great difficulty carrying out the desire of Lord Caitanya. But one day, while Rupa was sitting on the bank of the Yamuna River contemplating his mission, a beautiful boy came to him and asked the cause of his despondency. Rupa Goswami explained. The boy then led him to a small hill.
'Inside this hill',said the boy, 'is the beautiful Deity Govindadeva'. He said that the Deity had been buried to protect Him during a Muslim invasion.
The next day Rupa Goswami led a group of villagers to the site and had them excavate the hill. The Deity Govinda was unearthed. Rupa Goswami then had a magnificent temple constructed under the patronage of Emperor Akbar and Maharaja Man Singh of Amber, Rajasthan. Sri Govinda Deva is presently being worshipped at Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Rupa Goswami fulfilled all four parts of the mission given to him by Lord Caitanya, including writing many books on Krsna consciousness. He passed away in 1564. Devotees pay respects to him by visiting his samadhi, or memorial tomb, in the courtyard of the Radha-Damodara temple in Vrindavana.
