Why do we perform devotional service?
Is it due to love of Krsna? Or Srila Prabhupada?
Or is it because we have a love of ourselves?
If we do not maintain a sense of consciousness of Krsna in our spiritual lives through regular chanting and reading we can so easily become mesmerized by our own puny efforts. This leads to us thinking we are the doer... and that leads to frustrations and anxiety. Why? Because we start to think we have to achieve certain tasks and the success and failure of these tasks depend on us.
We also start to cause offences as we start to measure the devotees abilities in comparison to ours.
The Krsna element of our devotional life completely disappears at this stage. Only if He chooses to be merciful does He step in and nicely arrange a lesson whereby you ... and others around you... are reminded that actually He is in charge and that you are just a tiny jiva struggling with the mind and senses.
